ACL P5A Pacific Pack

The P-5-A class Pacifics were constructed according to the United States Railroad Administration (USRA) Light Pacific standard design for efficient passenger service. Built in March 1919 by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) at its Richmond Works, it was acquired by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad (ACL). They hauled passenger trains for the ACL across routes spanning from New York to Florida, typically pulling 10 to 12 cars at speeds up to 70 mph before transitioning to freight duties in Tampa, 1504 was retired in 1952. Designated a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) in 1990, the locomotive exemplifies early 20th-century American steam technology with its standardized design incorporating a 73-inch driving wheel diameter, 200 psi boiler pressure, and Walschaerts valve gear for efficient high-speed operation. 1504 is currently undergoing restoration and was recently donated to the Tennessee Valley Railroad Musuem.
