One of many railroads to by ALCO’s short-lived C636 was the Illinois Central, built in 1968, these engines stood out on the Illinois Central for being the very few, if not only ALCOs directly ordered by the mostly EMD railroad, and unsurprisingly for an EMD road, these ALCOs weren’t exactly well liked.
While they seem forgettable at first, they did have some early interesting hi-jinks in Canada, where they were leased to the Canadian Pacific in late December of 1969, and were there for a 90 day period, and when that ended, they returned back to the Illinois Central.
Another notable thing was C636 #1101, which was the only one out of the six to wear the Illinois Central Gulf Livery, which is pretty interesting.
But alas, by 1979, these ALCos would be retired, and eventually sold off to Precision National, and eventually scrapped there.
