ATSF Mikado Pack

A large group of heavy 2-8-2 "Mikado" steam locomotives were among the many that worked the extensive trackage of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe in days past. The 3160 class was built from 1917-1920 as freight traffic surged during the First World War and into the prosperity of the roaring 20s. An identical class of 2-8-2, the 4000s, were built in 1921 with a second batch in 1923. Together both classes of 2-8-2 served from the 20s through the depression years, up through World War II. Two locomotives, 3167 and 4067 were lost in the Kaw Valley area of Kansas during the Great Flood in 1951. The rest were all scrapped by 1955.
