ALCO C628 Demonstrators

Special thanks to N8phu for allowing these, and many of the following converts that are being re-released to be possible.

 

The first of the ALCO 6-Axle centuries, and with one of the most elegant designs, the C628 demonstrators sported a fancy gold and black paintscheme, which may or may not have ended with several examples being ordered by several railroads in the US, Mexico, and even the Land down under, with a total of 186 examples built through 1963 till 1968.


Granted, they weren’t perfect, as they had aluminum wiring, which was cheaper than copper wiring, but more of a pain to deal with.

 

After the demonstration period had ended, all four of them were sold off to the Southern Pacific, where they lasted till about the late 70s, where like all of the SP C628s, were retired and eventually sold off for scrap.
