Flying Scotsman USA Pack

Built-in 1923, LNER 4472 Flying Scotsman was named for one of the flagship trains of the London and North Eastern Railway. Flying Scotsman’s claim to fame was her (disputed) official record as the first locomotive to hit 100 MPH. Following her withdrawal from service in 1963, Sir Alan Pegler purchased the locomotive for only £3,000.

 

In 1969, in coordination with the British government, Pegler shipped Flying Scotsman and 5 LNER full brakes, 2 Pullman Parlours, a Pullman Observation, and a BR MK1 Brake Coach to the United States for a tour of British trades. The train snaked its way down to Houston in 1969, where it was stored for the winter. After emerging from the roundhouse in Houston, Flying Scotsman sported a black pilot, similar to American locomotives.

 

Flying Scotsman crisscrossed the country until 1972, totaling over 15,000 miles of running. In 1972, however, Pegler was far too much in debt and had to declare bankruptcy. Flying Scotsman was moved to the US Army depot in Lathrop to avoid creditors scrapping the locomotive for safe storage. Sir William McAlpine soon purchased Flying Scotsman, smuggled out of the San Francisco Bay under the cover of night, and repatriated to the United Kingdom in 1973
