UP DDA40X (Post-1980)

The DDA40X was a unique design of diesel locomotive produced by EMD for Union Pacific in 1969 through 1970. They were nicknamed Centennial and given the 6900 number series to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad in 1869. They handled the high-speed intermodal freights and other top-priority trains for UP for 10 years until a financial recession in 1980 put them into storage. These two-engine giants were last put into service in 1984 to fill a shortage of motive power on UP's mainlines. By 1986, their revenue careers were over but 6936 served for many more years in UP heritage's fleet before being sold to the Midwest Rail Preservation Society. Several other surviving units remain on display in different states
